Portraits

I devoted a large Moleskine watercolor book to portraits of criminals, painted from mugshots. Some are watercolor, others are sumi ink.

What a strongest talent you have. I was learning your journals yesterday, returned to them today and will do it again. Take care of your hands. And head. And heart.
And I am so sorry about your wife.
And please keep posting, your works are so strong, even smallest sketches, are amazing.

    Hi Danny,

These portraits are fabulous. I love to draw but often feel stumped on finding something TO sketch. Your site is very inspiring as it seems to say… Just look around and Voila, even in line at the post office there is a potential for sketching ideas in the mug shots (!) always something of interest.

    Your color palette is wonderful.

I really enjoy looking at your sketches. I was curious the gallery is of criminal’s mug shots, what did the monkey do?

So, are you planning on a new career as a bounty hunter? Are you memorizing each facial feature so you will know them on sight? If so, be careful!

  5. [...] am particularly inspired by these portraits by Danny Gregory. I’m sure the influence is obvious. The freshest in culture. Featured on PopPressed [...]

    Hi,

I’ve been looking at your work for a while now, and its inspiring me so much. I’m going off to uni soon and I’m having to make some independent work for them to look at. I really want a style similar to yours, and I love the idea of illustrated journalling, I’m just having difficulty knowing how to start one. I have your book ‘An illustrated life’ – which I love by the way! and I was just wondering whether or not you use certain watercolours? because when I look at your work, the quality looks really good..

    Hello Danny,

I love your drawings, and the monkey especially caught my eye – I guess because I am an animal lover. My husband recently bought me An Illustrated Life and it is my most valued book. It has inspired me to get into drawing in journals in a big way. A fantastic book and thank you for putting it together. I just used to dabble very sporadically but seeing how other people write around their drawings it has inspired me no end to do this myself. I have noticed most contributors say their journals are their most valuable possessions and I can see why. You have inspired me Danny. Best wishes.
